I just returned from a beautiful weekend in Neah Bay with the ladies from church. The weather was blustery and wet, but the time together was joyous, even raucous on more than one occasion.
So what’s the big deal? Why retreat?
- We giggle.
A happy heart makes the face cheerful.
We were giggling before we’d left the parking lot. Together we can giggle over the silliest of things and keep giggling for reasons forgotten. Not only does laughter bring a smile, but it brings a lightness to our whole being.
- We eat.
The cheerful heart has a continual feast.
We get to eat and eat and eat. We set aside the “shouldn’t,” “can’t” and “not sure” to savor the delectable gifts carefully chosen and shared. Yes, we come home a little heavier, but trust me, every pound is worth it!
- We study and pray.
I will praise you with an upright heart as I learn your righteous laws.
We jump into God’s Word. Midway through our first study together, Michol talked about the different perspectives we all bring to a verse, a topic, a question. How enriching! How insightful! God’s done some amazing things in our lives—in all of our lives.
- We connect and reconnect.
And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all.
Some we see frequently, others not as often. But give us three days together and a few longer chats and we’re renewed and inspired by the bonds of friendship. Those giggles, that food, and the remarkable power of God’s Word unite us in ways not possible after church over a quick cup of coffee.
- We encourage and inspire.
Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in the spirit and of one mind.
We are all part of God’s great story. What a joy to know that we get to travel together!
